Once there was a large fen, which today is evidence of the fossil peat soils that are still present. In earlier centuries the moor was largely drained and moist meadows and pastures were created. In the 1990s, the Hienerwiesen were mostly grazed with sheep. In the meantime, a herd of suckler cows grazes in some areas. Most of the areas are mowed - but late to give orchids and other rare plants a chance to sow. Various small bodies of water with a view of the tree frog in need of protection have also been created.

The biotope network project Hienerwiesen, Kleewiese and Mondscheinstrauch-Moor
The Hienerwiesen are currently the largest property owned by the BUND Hessen. The area used intensively for agriculture by the previous owner is now used extensively as grassland and grazed by a herd of migrating sheep. A small swimming pond in the area was transformed into a natural amphibian spawning area. This project is also intended to offer the endangered tree frog a new habitat
