If you have already ventured into this beautiful region, you should head straight for Elmau. We also recommend the trip on Ferchensee and Lautersee, in the direction of Mittenwald.

Mary Isabel Portman bought the Kranzbachwiese in 1913 and started building her house. In 1915 the "English Castle" was completed despite the start of the war, but Mary Portman had already left Germany. In 1931, the Evangelical Church in Dortmund leased the house and ran a convalescent home for young people from the Ruhr area. From 1938 to 1945 the Kranzbach was a place of the so-called children's land deportation and subsequently a recreation hotel for officers of the US Army. From 1947 until 2003, the evangelical church moved in again and then sold it to the current owners, who opened "Das Kranzbach" as a wellness hotel in 2007.

Kranzbach Castle comes shortly after Elmau Castle (private road). Very good and rather expensive hotel. Very nice location in a great hiking and rest area, nature reserve.

Worthwhile exploring the two castles on the high plateau. It's just a shame that the Evangelical Church in Dortmund has sold Kranzbach Castle and thus deprived many people in large sections of the population who, for decades, have been able to experience community and holiday joy as well as impulses for everyday life there at good conditions.
