The Guelph dynasty shaped the town of Wolfenbüttel and its current appearance. For over four centuries (until 1754), the town was the residence of the culture- and art-loving Dukes of Brunswick and Lüneburg, a center of intellectual life and the fine arts.

The entire old town is practically built to the standards of the 18th century. Over 1,000 half-timbered houses are its pride and joy, and its alleys are perfect for strolling and taking photographs.
