In order to build a hunting lodge in the forested area of Teltower Heide, today's Grunewald, Elector Joachim II acquired a property from the noble family von Spi(e)l on the south-eastern shore of Spi(e)ls-See, later Grunewaldsee, north-east of the town of Dahlem . He had a moated castle built directly on the shore for hunting stays, which he called Zum Grüne Wald. He laid the foundation stone himself on March 7, 1542.

Berlin's oldest palace is a unique example of Renaissance architecture in Berlin with its palace, courtyard and outbuildings. The special location on the banks of the Grunewaldsee in the middle of the forest also offers an attractive setting for Berlin's largest Cranach collection.

Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg had the castle built from 1542 for his hunting trips. As a defining figure for the development of the Renaissance in Berlin, Joachim II gave numerous commissions to Lucas Cranach the Elder and Younger, including the Passion panels for the Berlin Collegiate Church and the series of sovereign virtues (exemplum panels), which were used to decorate the Berlin Palace was determined. Today, the almost 30 works convey an impressive picture of the rulers and the artistic creation at the Berlin court in the 16th century.

The top-class Cranach collection in the hunting lodge is supplemented by the holdings of the SPSG of old German and old Dutch paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries.

A series of portraits of Brandenburg-Prussian rulers from the 16th to the 19th century can be viewed as part of special tours. This rulers' gallery offers fascinating insights into the development of portrait art from the Renaissance to the Romantic period.

Another thematic focus of the permanent exhibition relates to the castle's original use as a hunting station. Diverse artistic evidence of the Hohenzollerns' passion for hunting is collected here - from the Renaissance to the early 20th century. You can see depictions of court hunts and hunting festivals as well as pieces of equipment from electoral and royal castles with hunting motifs and various types of trophy presentations. The most important types of hunting in Brandenburg-Prussia are presented in the hunting equipment magazine opposite the castle.

In addition, the Grunewald hunting lodge has established itself as a location for concerts and a variety of events in Berlin's cultural life.
