Amstenrade Castle dates in its current form from 1788. It was built by order of Mr. Willems, a wealthy Liège banker.

The eighteenth-century castle was built between 1780 and 1788 to a design by architect Bartholomé Digneffe. However, the plans were not completed and the right wing and square northeast tower were not executed, giving the distinct “L” shape to the current building. Nicolas Willems' niece, Marie Victoire de Hayme de Bomal inherited the castle. She was married to Claude Romain, Count de Marchant et d'Ansembourg. Thus the castle became the property of the family who still own it.

Amstenrade Castle is one of the finest examples of neoclassicism in the Netherlands.
