                        The Echten pumping station is located just north of the village of Echten on the dike of the Tjeukemeer. Initially, the Veenpolder was powered by wind power. The first steam mill for the polder was built around 1865. The new pumping station, which was built in 1913, was also a steam pumping station. In 1925 it was decided to replace steam power with electric. The redundant chimney was demolished a few years later.

                        In 1996 the pumping station was decommissioned and replaced with a new underground pumping station next to the old complex. In 2004/2005 the pumping station was restored and in 2007 the former steam mill got its chimney back. The pumping station is recognized as a national monument and is opened as a museum in the summer months. An exhibition about the history of the Echten polder is set up in the pump room with machines. There is a gallery in the pumping station's former boiler house. The Gemaal Museum and Galerie het Gemaal are open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons during the summer months. The pumping station is owned by the Stichting Waterschapserfgoed.
