This nature reserve has a size of 12.87 ha. The purpose of the protection is to protect the area in the natural regional sub-unit of Münzenberger Rücken of the northern Wetterau, which is characterized by the remains of sand pioneer grassland, siliceous grassland and heathland communities, with some animal and plant species that are unique for the entire Wetterau natural area to secure. However, the protection also applies to orchards and fresh meadows that are in physical contact with these communities. The structures and quartzite banks created by the sand mining form a further protective basis from a geological and landscape-aesthetic point of view. Finally, the protection of the preservation of open water areas is considered the habitat of an adapted animal and plant world. The aim of maintenance is to keep the nutrient-poor and heathland open by reintroducing extensive sheep herding, maintaining the basis of life for sand pioneer species and transforming the large body of water into a richly structured shallow water swamp area.
