Neuf-Brisach is an Alsatian town steeped in history. Built after the loss by the kingdom of France of Vieux-Brisach on the other side of the Rhine, it symbolizes the Franco-Germanic relationship. It is now separated from its German counterpart by the bridge over the Rhine. More than a simple construction, this bridge symbolizes the link between the two countries.

Built ex nihilo in 1697 by Vauban on the orders of Louis XIV, Neuf-Brisach is part of the network of major Vauban sites and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Located on the routes of EuroVelo 15 and the cycle route between Colmar and Fribourg, it is an essential stop for cycling. Walking along its ramparts and discovering its streets following the characteristic octagonal plan of the city is very pleasant.

The city was built at the beginning of the 18th century by the fortress builder Prestre de Vauban, who created it as a planned city in the form of an octagon with central parade ground, which is now used as a marketplace, and a chessboard-shaped road network as the ideal form of a fortified city. In the city there were accommodations for soldiers and officers, utilities, a church, houses for non-military residents of different estates. The system of walls, ditches and gates around the city is still impressive today.
