Thanks to the Hohenwarthe double-lock, the ships can overcome the height difference of 18.5 m. Added to this are the savings lock and the Rothensee boat lift, the Niegripp lock and the connecting canal sections. As a result, the Ruhr area is connected to Berlin at the same level as the Elbe.
