The Casinoweiher, which was dammed up in 1861 by the construction of a 300 m long earth wall, is probably the most beautiful remaining relic of the lively mining activity in the former Altenberg and the surrounding area in the 19th century.
This almost 5 hectare reservoir was created by the mining company "Vieille Montagne" as a water reservoir for washing the Galmeierze and the resulting deposits can still be seen in the form of heaps of heaps that protrude laterally over the dam.

The Casino pond is actually a reservoir and dates back to 1862. It was created by the Vieille-Montagne mining company as a water reserve for ore washing. Today, thanks to its reed belt, it is a valuable biotope that serves as a resting, resting or breeding place for many birds. The pond is classified as Natura 2000 (BE33007 - Göhltal above Kelmis).
The "Vieille-Montagne" nature reserve, which consists of the former tailings dumps of the ore washing, borders directly on the pond. The very rare calamine flora grows on these soils, which are contaminated with heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cd), with the calamine violet being the most striking representative, which can be admired on site from April to November.
