The Goitzschesee is the largest lake in a lake district, which originated from the former lignite mine Goitzsche in the Bitterfelder lignite mining area.
In 1998, the flooding of the former opencast mining area was started with the discharge of Muldewasser and terminated prematurely after the 2002 trough.

Originally the Goitzsche opencast mine was to be planned and gradually flooded over the years. During the floods in August 2002, the tides of the hollow poured into the huge hole. Two days later a lake was created. Today a natural paradise and recreation area with many sights. A bike rental station is located directly at the water level tower. Well-developed bike paths make a tour an experience, also emotionally compassionate with the fate of the villages that fell victim to the former open-cast mine and not to forget the residents who were forcibly relocated.

Great bathing area right in Bitterfeld, DLRG has a bathing base there, swim about 100m to the bathing island in the lake and enjoy the view from there.
There is an Ital in the harbor in Bitterfeld. Restaurant and a beach bar, with cool drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) to enjoy in a deck chair surrounded by powdered sand.
