Arrone is a town of about 2800 inhabitants in the province of Terni.
The two-thousand-year history of the village is testified by the discovery of a travertine stone, a marble slab with an inscription in the church of San Lorenzo in Tripozzo, a female head in marble dating back to the second century. BC, some bronzes and a seal coming from a probable sanctuary on the top of Mount Arrone.
However, according to the documentary sources, Arrone derives its name from the noble Arroni family, who, according to the Foligno historian Ludovico Iacobilli, founded it in the 9th century AD.
Iacobilli drew this information from the archives of the abbeys of Subiaco, Farfa and Ferentillo, the name is however documented in the 10th century with Giuseppe “Dominus Castri Arroni“.
However, it seems that at the end of the 9th century, a Roman nobleman named Arrone, linked to the gastaldato of Rieti, pushed by the devastation of the Saracens and Ungari, advanced into the Valnerina, took possession of one of the rocky promontories that stood there and built a fortified castle, initially in wood and then rebuilt in masonry.
This castle was the first nucleus of the town, which took its name from him and was subsequently handed down to all his lineage.
