“Memorial in memory of the deportation of Jewish children from Duisburg” is the full title of this sculpture. If you circle the square column made of rusty steel (and only then) you can read the text welded in relief in steel letters: “From this point, between 1938 and 1945, at least 130 Jewish children from Duisburg were deported to the National Socialist concentration and death camps.”

Some of the letters and numbers are designed as barred holes in the steel plates; they provide a view of the interior of the column, where metal signs with the names and dates of life of some of the child victims hang on chains. Helene Wajnsztok, we learn in this way, was probably only 12 years old.

A convincingly successful memorial, designed by the Duisburg artist Gerhard Losemann, carried out in collaboration with young people from the Thyssen-Krupp training workshop.
