      The Panperduto dam is one of the most important hydraulic junctions in Lombardy: from here part of the waters of the Ticino river are diverted to form the Villoresi canal, used for irrigation, and the Industrial canal. It is located within the municipal territory of Somma Lombardo, in the province of Varese, and is included in the territory of the Lombardy Natural Park of the Ticino Valley.

            This is the beginning of intensive water management and the creation of various canals in the Ticino Valley. The Dighe di Panperduto secure the river, ensure sufficient water in the Canale industriale, and create a calm water zone suitable for swimming. Panperduto, by the way, literally means "lost bread." Where does the name come from? The internet offers three answers:
            The origin of the name "Panperduto" is uncertain: Some claim it derives from the exorbitant construction costs of the structure, which were never recouped. It could also be a reference to the very poorly paid and exploited workers who could barely make a living on their miserable wages. The third theory is that the name is related to the danger of capsizing that boats transporting goods, especially food, were exposed to on this stretch of the Ticino River, sometimes resulting in the loss of their cargo and their daily earnings, i.e., their "bread."                       Hydraulic junction of the 14th century from which the waters of the Ticino are diverted to feed the Villoresi canal. Particularly impressive in the late afternoon light. Next to it there is the Panperduto Hostel with a refreshment point, services, a garden with water games. On the other bank the Museum of Italian-Swiss Waters.
                      The Villoresi cycle path / walk starts from here.

                            Excellent route for both experts and beginners: on one side of the Naviglio the track is mostly asphalted and rather simple (any type of bike is fine), on the other side, however, it runs along another canal and is dirt and a little challenging (therefore you need mtbike). Very nice immersion in the nature of the Ticino Valley Park!

                              the panperduto dam is an obligatory crossroads for the paths and cycle paths on the Villoresi, with the bar open it is also an excellent refreshment point, on the origin of the name still today it is debated what it is due to, some stories speak of its exorbitant cost compared to the gain that its realization could bring, others of the loss of goods (including flour / bread) that in the shallow waters and with outcropping boulders many boats are said to have lost.

                                          Very suggestive and peaceful place. Bring a good supply of water because there are no fountains from Turbigo to Sesto Calende. The first bar is located after the Morina dam .. 😥
