From 1884 onwards, the "united vault and tank target", called Fort Douaumont, was built on the Kummersdorf shooting range with enormous labor and material expenditure. On the one hand, they wanted to know how to build stable, bulletproof bunkers (their own) and, on the other hand, how to effectively destroy them again (replica French bunkers). Reinforcement iron was not yet known, instead the cavities consisted of brick masonry, covered with a maximum 2 meter thick layer of hard granite concrete.

In just two days in 1887, the fort was devastated by massive fire from 22cm mortar shells. The remains can be found on an area of 10 hectares - still today!

Since then, something like an overgrown mountain landscape has formed, with tall, steep concrete cliffs, caves and deep craters with small lakes when it has rained. Much of the debris is overgrown with grass or moss. So please walk around here carefully, because holes can lurk in the thick moss.
