The basalt cone Parkstein above the town of the same name is one of the "100 most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria" and is the only national geotope in the region! It is at its top at 595 meters, the basalt wall itself is 38 meters high. The basalt cone is of volcanic origin. It formed in the Tertiary around 24 million years ago. Since July 2013, the Parkstein volcano experience has been enriched by the new volcano museum below the basalt cone with an hourly volcanic eruption.

The "volcano experience" Parkstein includes the basalt cone, the geopath and the rock cellars. On a footpath one reaches the summit of the "volcano" with its wonderful view, the basalt wall and the castle ruins with the mountain church. You can visit the inside of the volcano in the rock cellars! In addition, the museum "Vulkanerlebnis Parkstein", the info point and the guided tours round off this great and worth seeing experience place. Even Alexander von Humboldt was once impressed by the Hohe Parkstein and ennobled it as the “most beautiful basalt cone in Europe”.

There are somewhat hidden doors on the basalt cone that lead into the volcano. Here you can practically walk a bit into the volcano.

The terrain is primarily natural earth and rock.

Are dogs allowed at the Parkstein Basalt Cone and in the Volcano Experience Museum?

Dogs are generally welcome on the outdoor trails around the Parkstein Basalt Cone, provided they are kept on a leash. However, dogs are not permitted inside the Volcano Experience Museum. What are the parking options for visitors to the Parkstein Basalt Cone and Volcano Experience Museum?
