The first suburban miles of Via Appia Antica in southeastern Rome are a Grade I archeological site and a popular recreational area. The road and its surroundings are protected as a regional park from the further approach of suburban development. As an arterial road, the Appia was in antiquity lined with tombs, estates and spas.
