Originally built in 1770, Ponders End lock was mechanised in 1959. It sits on the River Lee Navigation, a section of the River Lea that was turned into a canal. Stretching between Hertford Castle Weir and Bow Creek on the Thames, the navigation is still very much in use today by boats as well as by walkers and cyclists on its towpath. The path can get muddy in winter.

Pretty muddy riding the Lee Valley Tow Path in winter - so be prepared.

If you take a ride on Lee Valley Road crossing between the two reservoirs open your eyes for broken glass bottles all the way, both the road and footpath. Also would recommend using the footpath, open stretch of road without any control, drivers tend to go over the speed limit.
