From 1860 began a period of changeful private property. Today the castle is owned by the Schulz-Wulkow family, which also inhabits it.
The castle can not be visited!
The castle Vichtenstein rises visibly above the Danube valley in the Sauwald in Upper Austria in the municipality Vichtenstein, opposite the market Obernzell in Lower Bavaria.
The castle is located above the right bank of the Danube on a steep hillside above the village Vichtenstein. The castle was inhabited in an uninterrupted sequence. As a result, the castle area was rebuilt and renovated through the centuries.
On the narrow ridge, which forms the connection from the castle to the Vorgelände, rises a massive high Romanesque tower. The oldest parts of the castle are the solitary keep and the gatehouse. Access to the tower is via a brick bridge that leads to the gate tower with pointed arch door and rollers above it for an earlier drawbridge. The two square residential towers were built in the 15th or 16th century. After the gate hall is the elongated front court, which is bounded on both sides by walls. After a sharp bend, the actual castle courtyard opens. The residential and farm buildings are based on the ring wall. This is reinforced by towers, which served for Seitenbestreichung.
Of art historical importance is also dedicated to the Holy Hippolytus of Rome castle chapel, built in the 14th century and expanded in the 17th century. The interior of the chapel has a ribbed vault with figural keystones
