The castle was built from 1878 under Ludwig II on the model of the Palace of Versailles. He lived there only a few days since the construction work ended with the death of Ludwig in June 1886. Unfortunately, the castle remained largely unfinished. Nowadays it is one of the biggest sights of Lake Chiemsee.
