The Schönrain ruin rises above the river Main between the towns of Hofstetten in the north and Steinbach in the south. It is embedded in the state forest of the Hammelburg forest company and has an eventful, forestry, history behind it.

Schönrain am Main was founded in 1080 as a monastery of the Benedictine order. It was partially destroyed and looted for the first time in the German Peasant Wars in 1525, but subsequently acquired and rebuilt by the Counts of Rieneck - but now as a place of residence. Only after the death of the last countess in 1574 did Schönrain return to Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn and from then on was used as the seat of the local forest managers and hunters.

An old legend from the MainPost from November 2004:
"THUNDER UNDER THE EARTH"
One of the many traditions from Schönrain Castle is the story of the Peasants' War that raged in Franconia in 1525. The revolting and plundering crowds once came to Schönrain, occupied the castle and took everything that was not nailed down.
When the last residents had left the castle, the rebels made the building and its surroundings their refuge. From there they set out to attack the richly laden ships that were sailing along the Main between Nantenbach and Neuendorf. They dragged their booty along with the prisoners up to Schönrain Castle and demanded a large ransom from them.
If this was not paid for, the unfortunate people were put in barrels that were studded with long nails on the inside and they were rolled down an underground secret passage into the Main, where they were miserably killed. Even today some people claim to have heard the rolling and thundering underground in this area at night.
