In 1299, King Håkon V Magnusson had Akershus Castle and fortress built. The castle complex was further expanded in the 14th century. Located on the very edge of the Akersneset peninsula, the medieval castle enjoyed a strong strategic position and withstood many sieges over time.
Under Christian IV, the castle was modernized and converted into a Renaissance palace and royal residence. In the 18th century, the fortress began to deteriorate, and restoration work only began in 1899.
Daily outdoor tours are available during the summer.

The fortress was first mentioned around 1300. In the 17th century, the medieval castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance castle. Today several museums are housed in the rooms.
