The Krümmel Nuclear Power Plant (KKK for short) is located near the town of Geesthacht in the Krümmel district. The plant primarily served to meet the electricity needs of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg and is located approximately 34 kilometers southeast of the city center.

Located on the Elbe River, the plant has a relatively long construction period and has become a prime example of the impact of new regulations on the construction of new plants. After commencing operations in 1983, the plant supplied electricity to the Hamburg metropolitan area for many years. The plant gained public attention, particularly after two malfunctions in 2007 and 2009, when it came under heavy criticism and became a political football. The plant was forcibly shut down in 2011 by memorandum.
