The Millennium Bridge received its name in 1929 when the new bridge was inaugurated on the occasion of the city's 1000th anniversary. To give the former Long Bridge the necessary height, the main street had to be filled in and the houses in that section of the street had to be demolished. The Long Bridge was the first direct connection between the old and new towns. The first wooden bridge was built around 1230/1240 and had to be renovated several times. Next to the Long Bridge, in the middle of the Havel River, stood a repeatedly renovated two-story half-timbered building on wooden piles from the middle of the 14th century until the spring of 1700. This was connected to the bridge by a short footbridge.

In 1860, the bridge was completely rebuilt. A wooden bascule bridge was built. However, this was replaced by an iron structure in 1892.

The central section was a drawbridge, which over the years became an increasing obstacle to traffic in the city's development and was subsequently closed and demolished in 1928.

That same year, a reinforced concrete bridge with three spans was built.

On September 7, 1929, the new bridge was inaugurated and named the "Millennium Bridge."

The "Millennium Bridge" was also intended to have symbolic significance.

It was intended to help bring people from the two parts of the city closer together
and promote the unification of the entire city through better understanding.

The new bridge was intended to bring the old and the new eras together.

In 1945, the Millennium Bridge was demolished and rebuilt in 1946/47.
