The gate of the former monastery is very well maintained, as the Romantic Road leads directly through the inner courtyard of the monastery. A small restaurant in the monastery barn and the broom bars are always worth a visit.

The monastery was first mentioned in a document dated April 11, 1172. At that time, Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa took the monastery in Schäftersheim, which his nephew Duke Frederick of Rothenburg, who died in 1167, had founded for women living according to the rule of Saint Augustine, under his protection. The monastery was founded in competition with the Lochgarten monastery, which Barbarossa had overseen, and was located not far from the Hohenlohe castle of Weikersheim.
