Probably the most famous bridge in Amsterdam is the Magere Brug, which crosses the Amstel. It was built in 1934 and crosses the canal at Kerkstraat. It is one of the few surviving wooden Dutch bridges. Because the original 1691 bridge that stood at this point, the Kerkstraatbrug, was very narrow, the name 'Magere Brug' dates back to that time.

he bridge is probably the most iconic image of Amsterdam, even more so than the Royal Palace on Dam Square or the Red Light District. It can be seen in the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever, in which Sean Connery plays secret agent 007.

Why is this beautiful but modest white wooden bridge such a strong image? A number of characteristic (alleged) Dutch characteristics come together. Simplicity: it is a simple but elegant bridge. Then the water and the battle against it, which has made the Netherlands famous worldwide. And perhaps most importantly: here in the busy city centre you can see a tranquil image of a long wooden drawbridge according to an age-old model over the wide, calm Amstel. That gives a timeless, modest and fairytale-like image of a Dutch city from the Golden Age. Nevertheless, the bridge will soon be remotely controlled in the most modern way.
