    The Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is one of the largest monastic communities in Europe dating back to the Middle Ages. It is a place with a rich history, located in the heart of the Loire Valley and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

      Fontevraud Abbey is a unique place of culture! The building is huge and houses a very beautiful permanent collection where you will see, among other things, the very moving tombstones of Richard the Lionheart and his mother Eleanor of Aquitaine. Eleanor, this incredible woman, who uniquely was both Queen of France then Queen of England and in so doing is at the origin of the famous hundred years war between the two kingdoms. By marrying the King of England she offered with her a good part of the kingdom of France, which caused the famous war.

      The royal abbey of Fontevraud is also a museum of modern art, a very beautiful hotel, two restaurants, including a gastronomic one, temporary exhibitions, as well as conferences and seminars. For more information on this incredible place, visit their website: fontevraud.fr

                  I allowed 4 hours and could have stayed longer to enjoy a meal in this cute town. The Abbey of Fontevrad is so interesting, huge and beautiful. There is a section on its 150 years of use as a prison. Plus a fantastic contemporary gallery, contemporary being the last 100 years. Very special place. I rode via the bike path on the way there through pretty fields, and on main roads on the way back (much faster).
