The castle was built in the first half of the 12th century by the noble family of Schauenburg, who were first mentioned in 1130 and descended from the Hessons. The family died out in the late 13th century, however the castle continued to be used as such and was expanded in the mid-14th century.

The Wall Hexagon was probably a lower needle seat, which was created depending on the Schauenburg. The multiple castle complex of the castle stable incorrectly called Kronenburg (actually near Dossenheim) is also mentioned in connection with the Schauenburg. Assumptions that it was a predecessor to the Schauenburg could not be substantiated.

In 1460, the castle was besieged by Elector Friedrich I for five days during the Palatinate-Mainzian War and was demolished after the handover. As early as 1750, the chronicler Wickenburg reported that he saw nothing but little brickwork and ditches on Burgplatz.

Security work has been carried out by the “Schauenburg Working Group” since 1982.
