The Gömnitzer Turm (also called "Major") is a former sea mark on the top of the 93.80 m high Gömnitzer mountain near the village of Gömnitz in the Ostholstein district (municipality of Süsel). From the Gömnitz Tower, four small openings offer a view of the surrounding landscape of Holstein Switzerland and over the Bay of Lübeck.
The Gömnitzer tower is the symbol of the municipality of Süsel, whose coat of arms shows the tower.
It is a round about 8 m high (30 feet) column made of bricks on a foundation of field stones with a diameter of about 2m. The top of the tower is covered with hewn natural stones. Below the top of the tower are four small openings (light wells) - two opposite oval openings and two windows. The tower is accessible via an entrance - inside a 41-step spiral staircase leads to the top.
The tower stands on an oval plateau supported by field stones and delimited by a fence in the middle of a meadow.
Until 1815, a large tree (an oak or a beech) - called "Major" - stood on the top of the Gömnitzer Berg, which served as a landmark for the ships in the Bay of Lübeck to find the way to Lübeck. This tree was destroyed by lightning or a storm.
As this landmark was not available to seafarers for orientation, the pilot commandant in Travemünde asked the Oldenburg Duke - the sovereign of the then principality of Lübeck - to set up an artificial sea mark. ! 827 the tower was completed. It was to be demolished in 1961, but it was listed in 1969, renovated in 1983 and 1990 and has been accessible since 1993.

The road up to the tower is a private path (of the adjoining courtyard) - we did not cycle up and respected privacy (would have liked to go up), but continued to the parking lot / stairway where you can connect the bikes and then can climb the stairs to the tower. The way up is worth it!

Great view from the Gömnitzer Berg on Neustadt, the Bay of Lübeck and inland. Well, from the tower you can only see through the hatches, it's just a former sea mark from 1826/27.

In the 18th century, a large tree, called the "Major," stood on the peak of the 93.80-meter-high Gömnitz Hill, which served as a landmark for ships navigating the Bay of Lübeck. This tree was destroyed by lightning and a storm in 1815. Since sailors lacked this landmark for orientation, the Gömnitz Tower was built as an artificial sea mark.

The round brick tower was built on a foundation of fieldstone.
The roof is covered with hewn natural stone.
In 1961, the Lübeck Waterways and Shipping Authority actually wanted to demolish the tower,
as it was no longer needed as a landmark for shipping. However, the municipality of Süsel received the land as a gift from the federal government and renovated the structure with public subsidies. On March 24, 1969, the Gömnitz Tower was listed as a cultural monument. The tower was restored in 1982 and 1990.
The Gömnitz Tower has been open as an observation tower since 1993. Inside, a spiral staircase with 41 steps, illuminated by a grid of light, leads to the top, which features four small openings. From these small windows, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape
of Holstein Switzerland and across the Bay of Lübeck.
Approximately 50 meters north of the parking lot on the "Zum Major" road, there is a steep staircase leading up to it.
The Gömnitz Tower is the landmark of the municipality of Süsel in the Ostholstein district.
On November 5, 1984, the municipality of Süsel received permission from the state of Schleswig-Holstein to use its coat of arms, which features the Gömnitz Tower as a motif.

12 years later, Süsel also received permission to use the flag with the
Gömnitz Tower as a motif.

"Zum Major" - The street that runs along the property Das Abendrotes Haus was named after a large tree (oak or beech) that served as a landmark for ships on the Gömnitzer Berg until 1815. After a lightning strike destroyed the tree, a tower was erected on the site by the Duke of Oldenburg in 1826/27. The Gömnitzer Tower is the symbol of the municipality of Süsel and can be found on the coat of arms of the municipality. Since 1993, the tower, which is also called "Major", can be used as a lookout tower. A wonderful view from the top of the Gömnitzer Berg through the four openings of the tower over the Neustadt Bay or the Baltic Sea is guaranteed!

Great 360° view of the entire area all the way to the sea.
There are also bike racks at the foot of the tower. It's definitely worth packing a bike lock, as the climb with cleats and bike on your back saves you the trip to the gym...
