In the heart of the Camargue stand the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes, a medieval city. This city marked successively by the history of the Crusades and the Templars then by the wars of religion is today a city where it is good to stroll.

In the 17th century its port was the most powerful on the Mediterranean coast. Born from the desire of Louis IX to develop maritime trade, the city displays medieval architecture which was once intended to protect the Kingdom of France from invaders from the East.

Discover the Constance Tower, visit the Notre-Dame-des-Sablons church, stroll around Place Saint-Louis or even explore the chapel of the brotherhood of the Gray Penitents. Above all, don’t forget to taste the local fougasse. I recommend the one from Poitavin Frères which will delight your taste buds!

Aigues-Mortes is a former medieval fortress town, whose main attraction today is the fully preserved city wall around the historic city center. You can also climb the wall for a fee. The city is a real tourist attraction and sometimes very crowded, but definitely worth seeing.
