The castle is about 150 m from the route, but it is well worth the detour. The property was built between 1907 and 1909 in the style of historicism (with Baroque and Art Nouveau style) for the von Hirschberg family. The landlord Karl Rudolf von Hirschberg was a royal treasurer and in the rank of major general commanded the 4th Royal Bavarian Cavalry Brigade. Hirschberg Castle has a truly eventful history to this day: in 1943, the property became state-owned and was the guest house of the Reich Foreign Ministry. The most prominent guest was Benito Mussolini in 1943. After the war, the property was initially under the control of the US Armed Forces, then the property served as a seminary for the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and then as a Roman Catholic educational institution (late vocational school). From 1960 to 2000, the Federal Intelligence Service used the castle as a training center. In 2004 the property was again privately owned. Plans to make a riding stable and a hotel out of the complex failed. Today it is used privately again after another change of ownership. Accordingly, Hirschberg Castle is not open to the public. One can only take a look through the gate onto the western front of the property.
