The castle was founded by Wilhelm von Krewet in 1607 to relocate his residence from his freedom in Salzkotten. The Krevet family died out in the male line as early as 1638, and their estates in Verne, including Vernaburg and Eulenknapp, passed to the noble von Brenken family. (Source: Wikipedia)
Unfortunately, the castle ruins can only be viewed from a distance, as they are privately owned. Nevertheless, it is a worthwhile detour.
