The Port Museum Hamburg is located in the middle of the former free port on the last and listed site of a Kaizungenensembles, whose structure was created more than 100 years ago and at that time ensured an optimal transfer between sea ship and land transport. Until the end of the sixties, South America traffic was handled here via Bremerkai. By using the container, today's terminal facilities have a completely different structure.
The Hafenmuseum Hamburg has leased the southern part of Schuppen 50A and the open space adjacent to it from the Hamburg Maritim Foundation. Here is a variety of exhibits shown. The collection includes examples of the material culture of the past 100 years from cargo handling, shipping, shipbuilding and marine technology. The floating objects of the museum are accessible on the pontoon facility in Hansahafen.
The entire collection is provided by volunteers: professionals who have spent their working lives in the port or who are working in the port today. They are supported by freelance staff who are introducing the young museum visitors to the exciting history of the port and the changes in their work.
