The Erlenbach rises northeast of Sandplacken in the Taunus. It has a total length of around 30 km. Of this, 3.4 km are in the Frankfurt urban area. The stream owes its name to the many alders that used to line its banks. In the Frankfurt urban area, the Erlenbach is largely in a near-natural state. The idyllic character of the water is mainly characterized by the almost continuous woodland along the banks. The floodplain forests in the area between Nieder- and Ober-Erlenbach are particularly noteworthy. They offer a variety of breeding and nesting opportunities for birds. In addition to meadows, pastures and green fallow land, there are also arable land, some of which is used for growing vegetables, in the area around the water.
Within the stream bed, typical structures of a near-natural water body with changing water depths, still and shallow water zones have developed. The banks are also varied: flat banks and steep banks with cliffs have been created by the water dynamics.
