The bridge was damaged in a ship collision and will now be completely dismantled and replaced with a new bridge in a few years. Until then, rail service between Leer and Groningen will be suspended. A rail replacement bus service is operating from Leer to Weener, and there is a ferry near the bridge (see komoot.de/highlight/602259).

The bridge was particularly important for cyclists in the region who traveled daily to or from Weener. It provided a quick and easy route. Now, everyone has to take a significant detour, crossing the Ems River via Leer using the Jann-Berghaus Bridge.

"Use dependent on the tide

The pedestrian and cycle path can only be used at certain times, as the bridge must be opened for shipping traffic. Two hours before and after high tide, ships must cross the bridge; during these times, the path is closed to pedestrians and cyclists. During operating hours, the bridge is operated from the bridge operator's house.

Deutsche Bahn provides information about the exact opening times on its website in the "Downloads" section. Notices on site also provide information about the current operating hours."
