On the Ems route from Papenburg to Leer you pass the small town of Esklum. Here you will find one of the oldest churches in the Oberledingerland.
One of the two bells dates from 1377. The west tower of the church dates from the 15th century.
Due to the existing loopholes and a chimney system, it is assumed that the church in Esklum was a fortified church.

Esklum itself is said to have been called "Esschelshem" in earlier times, which means a home, place or house on good, dry farmland.
With the municipal reform of 1973, Esklum was integrated into the newly formed municipality of Westoverledingen.
