Trappist Abbey Westmalle
Between 1815 and 1830 the monastery falls under the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. The regime wants to abolish contemplative orders such as the Trappists. But the monks of Westmalle manage to prove their usefulness to society by establishing a school and opening a guest house. Despite this difficult and uncertain period, the community grew and in 1836 the priory was elevated to an abbey. In the end, the construction of what became the current abbey around 1900 was started. In the 1930s, the abbey complex was expanded with a renovated cowshed and a new brewery. The Trappist, Trippel and Extra van Westmalle are also brewed within the walls of the abbey.

Unfortunately you cannot visit the abbey, but you can taste the 'authentic trappist products' nearby. Nice, wooded area with numerous unpaved walking and cycling paths
