The Karl May Cave, also known as the Little Iron Cave, is located in the Waldenburger Oberwald near Hohenstein-Ernstthal. Originally a mine tunnel from 1620, it was later used as a hideout. In 1869, Karl May hid here when he was wanted for theft. Five years later, he mentioned the cave in his story "The Rose of Ernstthal". It was officially given its name in 1933. It was not accessible during the GDR era. Today, however, it can be visited again without any problems and is a reminder of the famous writer.

The Karl May Cave is now a monument to mining history, as its creation goes back to the arduous work of the miners.

This and a buried tunnel were driven into the mountain in 1620.

But the venture proved unprofitable. The "iron cave" was only remembered by locals. In the 18th century, it was temporarily used by gangs of robbers as a hiding place for stolen and robbed goods, so that the cave was also called the robber's cave. It was a refuge for Karl May several times when he was wanted by the police for various frauds and thefts.

The Karl May hiking trail, which begins at the Karl May House, leads to the romantically located Karl May Cave in the Oberwald.
