The floodplain landscape, with its 15 information stations along a 6.5-kilometer nature trail, hasn't always been as vibrant, colorful, and diverse as it is today. Until the mid-1980s, the area was used for agriculture. Today, the park's management prioritizes nature conservation over economic use: the meadows are not fertilized, are only managed gently, and the numerous small bodies of water are carefully maintained. Even pruning of trees and shrubs is carried out extensively. As a result, valuable plant and animal species are under special protection within the Emsaue nature reserve.
