The air watchtower was built in 1953 by order of the Ministry of Defence. It was part of a network of 276 lookout posts constructed across the country between 1951 and 1956 to spot enemy aircraft flying lower than radar could detect. The tower remained in use until 1964, when the regional air watch service was disbanded. After that, the tower was transferred to the Civil Defence (BB). The tower in Echten is now one of only 19 remaining air watchtowers.

The Air Watch Tower Post 7 X 3 was built in 1953 by order of the Air Force Corps (part of the Air Defense Command) of the Ministry of Defence. The tower was part of a nationwide network of 276 air patrol posts, of which about 139 were built specifically for this purpose between 1951 and 1955. The name also indicated the location: 7 (= Luchtwachtkring Groningen), X (= designation of the circle of towers), 3 (= serial number of the post within the circle).
