Newcastle Castle is a medieval fortress that gave the city its name. Whilst a fortification has existed on the site since Roman Times, in 1080 the son of William the Conqueror, Robert Curthose, built the first castle here out of timber. This was replaced about a century later with a stone castle on the orders of King Henry II. These days, you will find the castle an interesting place to visit and the views from the top are sublime. The castle is Grade I-listed.

Entry costs £8.50 for adults, £5 for children (under 5s are free), £24 for families, and £7.50 for seniors, students, concessions, and people with a disability (plus one carer). For more information, visit: newcastlecastle.co.uk.

Newcastle's castle dates as far back as the Roman times when a fort and settlement would have stood on the site. Over the centuries, the castle witnessed many uprisings and gruesome battles. Various monarchs and rulers made their own adjustments to the fortifications.

From the 16th to 18th century, the Castle was used as a prison until the mid 19th century, when it was partly demolished to make way for the railway. Because of this, today you can only visit the keep and the Black Gate.
