Built in 1935, the Streetcar Diner was once a kiosk next to the Riviera Restaurant. Twenty years later it was expanded into a restaurant. It was inducted into the Route 66 Hall of Fame in 2001. After the Riviera burned down in 2010, the diner was dismantled and found a new location next to the Two-Cell Jail in Gardner.
Gardner has owned a small 2-cell prison since 1906, which was in use until the 1950's. The community of Gardner restored the jewel at their own expense. It is a popular photo opportunity for Route 66 travelers. A memorial next to the prison is dedicated to the Norwegian priest Christian Christiansen, who helped prevent German atomic bombs from being built during World War II.
