The reservoir Geeste was built in the 1980s as a cooling water basin for the nuclear power plant Emsland twelve kilometers away. Today it is also a recreational area with extensive water sports such as swimming, windsurfing, sailing, diving, etc. The artificial lake is about two kilometers long and at the widest point 1.3 km wide. It is 15 meters higher than the surrounding terrain and there are only a few trees, so hardly covers for the wind and thus good sailing and surfing conditions.

Info: The artificial lake was built in the 1980s as a cooling water basin for the Emsland nuclear power station 12 kilometers away. It is about two kilometers long and 1.3 km wide at its widest point. It is located on the B 70 and 15 meters higher than the surrounding area. According to the RWE, the water surface is 230 hectares. Apart from rainfall and groundwater, the lake has no natural inflows. Its water is taken from the Ems via the Dortmund-Ems Canal and returned if necessary. The ring dam is a dam made of bulk earth.
