At about 107 meters above sea level are the widely visible water towers of Gelsenwasser in Herten. They are located on the Westerholter road just outside the district Scherlebeck near the A43 motorway. Due to their exposed location, the blue-green water tanks are widely visible and a landmark in the area. Within sight of the towers is the highest natural point Hertens, one looks from the artificial landscape buildings next to the nearby colliery Scherlebeck and the dump Hoheward. They serve the water supply of the environment and generate by the altitude the necessary water pressure in the pipeline network.

With a total capacity of 9,000 m3, these two water towers of Gelsenwasser AG are the largest in Germany. The oldest (western) dates from 1908. In its base is the apartment of the Wasserturmwartes, which is empty after switching to automatic operation since 1982. The neighboring tower was built in 1935. He rests on a steel structure.

The purpose of the water towers is to maintain the pressure in the pipe network, to cover the peak load and to even out the flow of water. To achieve this, they were built at an altitude of 109m NN and are thus a landmark visible from afar.
