Widenkirche, former St. Mary's Church in the old town
In the middle of the 12th century the church was built as a small Lady Chapel.
Around 1230 it was expanded into a Romanesque church with two towers.
Its name is derived from “dedicate”.
The High Gothic extension was built from 1350.
The nave has been in ruins since 1633.
In 1803 the south tower was demolished because it was in disrepair.
The tower, restored in 1996/97, carries the church bells.
The Widenkirche is the oldest and most beautiful sacral monument in the city.
