Tückelhausen Monastery is a former Carthusian monastery. Tückelhausen is an incorporated part of Ochsenfurt in Bavaria. Since secularization, most of the property has been used privately. The Carthusian monastery complex is almost completely preserved. The Carthusian Museum provides an insight into the history of the Franconian Carthusian monasteries and the everyday life of the monks.
Secularization
In the course of secularization, the economically well-positioned Carthusian monastery, which was fully staffed with 13 monks, was officially closed on February 25, 1803. On July 8 of that year, all members, including the last prior Bruno Esser, had to leave Tückelhausen. The monastery church was rededicated as the parish church of St. George on December 3, 1804, and the adjoining priory was adapted as a rectory, which at least prevented demolition. Since then, the rest of the property has been used privately.
Carthusian Museum
The then pastor Robert Rakowitz opened a Carthusian museum in 1991. The Diocese of Würzburg has been the sponsor of the museum since 1997. It provides an insight into the history of the Franconian Carthusian monasteries and shows the everyday life of the monks. You can visit the reconstructed house of a Carthusian monk with its small garden, the cloister and the chapter house. Contemporary works of art are on display in the former library.
