In furnaces such as blast furnace 5, ores were melted into pig iron together with many other additives at a heat of around 2,000 degrees. Such a blast furnace ran in continuous operation for ten years before it had to be re-bricked inside.

Of the former five blast furnaces of the Meiderich ironworks, three are still preserved today - after the early demolition of two furnaces. Blast furnace 5 is the only one of these three that is freely accessible to everyone. It was completely refurbished again shortly before the plant closed and is therefore well preserved.

Today an iron staircase at blast furnace 5 leads up to a visitor platform. Here you can enjoy a great view over the city of Duisburg, the Ruhr area and the Lower Rhine. Watch out: you see more green than you might have guessed. The sight is particularly beautiful at sunset or at night when the lights of the big city light up and the park becomes a light work of art.

Blast furnace 5 and its viewing platform are open every day and around the clock. In snow, storm and slippery conditions, the furnace is closed for safety reasons.

A dream at dusk or at night. Super great light installation and beautiful lighting. There is a lot to discover and climb during the day. From the top you have a magnificent view over the landscape park.
