                            A lock was built in 1957 with the barrage on the Elbe River to allow ships to overcome the difference in height.                             At the level of the weir, the Geesthacht Lock offers two parallel chambers, each 230 meters long and 25 meters wide.

                            The southern chamber went into operation in 1960, and the northern chamber was completed in 1981.

                            The chambers' four lifting gates are operated electromechanically. Due to the counterweights running in the reinforced concrete towers, only minimal force is required. The chambers are filled without surges by gently lifting the upper gates and through a channel in the central wall. Excess water from the neighboring chamber can also be used for filling via this channel.

                                        The Federal Transport Minister kept his word and inaugurated the Elbe Bridge on September 14, 1966, with 8,000 citizens in attendance. Actually, one should speak of two bridges here, because one bridge crosses the lock canal and the other the Elbe. Everyone was looking forward to this day, including local historian Theodor Nissen:
                                        "You can walk from Hachede to Hachede again," a reference to the roots of Geesthacht and Marschacht. It was a big day for Geesthacht at the time, as the city was also celebrating its 750th birthday.
                                        The Elbe Bridge was planned as part of the construction of the Elbe barrage. The barrage was already in operation in 1958. The Elbe Bridge was an important economic policy measure for Geesthacht. The bridge was intended to create a connection to the B5 (Hamburg-Lauenburg-Berlin) and the B4 (Hamburg-Lüneburg-Braunschweig). This new road layout was intended to relieve the pressure on Hamburg's Elbe bridges and improve traffic access to the areas on both sides of the Elbe.


                                        Since the route to Lower Saxony was now short and the site of the former Düneberg factory in Geesthacht could be developed, the bridge was expected to create jobs.

                                        Even during the bridge's construction, thousands of pilgrims made pilgrimages to the Elbe and stepped onto the work bridge (weapon service bridge) at the weir. Even cars were allowed to cross this temporary bridge starting in the summer of 1964.
                                        The bridge had dire consequences for the two ferry companies, the Rick family in Krümmel and the Feltig family in Geesthacht, forcing them to cease ferry service. Geesthacht's ferryman, Ernst Feltig, initially wanted to continue, but he too ceased operations on December 31, 1966.
                                        The bridge has a long history.
                                        The people of Geesthacht had been waiting for this day since the 1920s.
