Originally, the salt pond of the saline was used to store wood, for the wooden rods that were used to conduct the energy generated by water and wind to the pumping stations. After Oldesloe became a spa, in 1824 the saline pond, which was fed by natural salt springs, cleaned, enlarged and integrated into the infrastructure of the spa park. Today it is used as a fishing pond.

Bad Oldesloe was known for its saltworks and salt extraction. Since 1813 it has been a popular health resort near Hamburg. At that time the spa park was created especially for the spa guests. Then as now, the salt pond was a popular destination for walks through the park. Today you can walk through the spa gardens on the trail of salt extraction. Information boards provide information about the history of salt extraction and spa operations.
