Until the 1980s, the Chicago River was referred to by many residents as “the stinking river” because it was very dirty and filled with trash. In the 1990s, at the instigation of Mayor Richard M. Daley, the river was finally thoroughly cleaned as part of the city's beautification.

Walking along the river provides really nice views of the skyline. If you choose the parallel track along the road the overview is a bit better, below on the riverwalk it is quieter and great in the evenings.

Not only has the river been cleaned, but the direction of the river has been changed. And almost every building on the bank has its own story and technical features. I recommend booking an architecture boat trip and listening carefully to what the guides say.
